The Temple of Time in the Lanayru Desert is a critical location in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It is an ancient, sacred site associated with the Goddess Hylia and acts as a portal to the past via the Gate of Time. Though mostly in ruins during the Sky Era, it serves as a vital link to the history of Hyrule and the advanced civilization of the region.
History
The Temple of Time was built as a site of reverence and connection to the Goddess Hylia. Its proximity to the Timeshift Stone quarries suggests it played a dual role as both a ritual site and a functional part of the Lanayru region's technological infrastructure. The temple likely facilitated access to the past through the use of Timeshift technology, making it a place of profound significance for both spiritual and practical purposes.
Decline and Role in the Sky Era
By the time of the Sky Era, the temple has fallen into ruin, surrounded by the sands of the desert. Only fragments of its structure remained intact. Ultimately the Gate of Time at the temple was destroyed so that Impa could protect Zelda from Ghirahim which ensured he could not follow them into the past.
