Following the destruction of Demise via the Triforce, the enraged Ghirahim abducted Zelda and transported her through the Gate of Time. Once in the past, he carried out the ritual to bring the Demon King Demise back to life. Link pursued them, fighting and overcoming Ghirahim, but arrived too late as Demise had already been revived. Following a fierce battle, Link managed to defeat Demise. Upon his defeat, the Demon King's malice was absorbed into the Master Sword and sealed away. Consequently, the demons on the Surface ceased to terrorize its inhabitants<ref name="ghirahimresurrectsdemise">Sky Era, The Resurrection of the Demon King Demise, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, Page 76</ref>.
